People who consume porn can get aroused by things that they never used to or previously considered inappropriate. As individuals consume more extreme and dangerous versions of porn, a gradual shift happens in the brain that makes those behaviors become more commonplace and acceptable than before. Porn can definitely impact the brain negatively, including what and how a person desires someone sexually.

Reward Center

All mammals, including human beings, have a reward center part of the brain that helps promote healthy living through rewarding positive behaviors. This typically includes behaviors that keep a person alive or create new life and enriching experiences. The way it rewards a person is by pushing ‘pleasure chemicals’ through the brain to make a person feel great. While enjoying that good feeling, the brain also builds new nerve pathways to connect the pleasure that is felt with the activity that is being done. The association between activity and the ‘reward’ happens automatically, even if that was not intended. The reward center is a great thing, when it works well. However, the brain can be tricked by porn into treating consumption of porn as a reward. Once people become accustomed to the porn that is viewed, it is easy to move on to other, different types of porn that are more extreme. Some people even stop responding sexually to a person they are in a relationship with, even though they are able to respond to porn.

Normalizing Desire

Research has discovered that watching pornography affects attitudes and beliefs towards sex, women, and relationships. Consumers of porn are more likely to express attitudes supporting violence against women and studies have shown a strong correlation between men’s porn. Acts of violence and sexual aggression can occur over time towards real life partners which is not to say a person will become a rapist or harm others but the predilection is building in a much more harsh direction because the brain has changed. Casual pornography consumption has the power to change ideas about reality and what a person desires. It corrupts the deepest instinct for romantic connection and seeks out other means of being satisfied. People crave happiness, connection, and love. Real love and real relationships are what compel people towards healthier lives but when porn corrupts desire, it can be a difficult challenge to reset the brain and body to adjust to reality.
