Religious icons such as Maria Sabina shared the secret of mushrooms with celebrities such as Paul McCartney and John Lennon, making hallucinogens one of the most sought-after drugs. Pure opium was known to have these properties as well, but are not taken for this purpose. Indian tribes and other aboriginal tribes use natural hallucinogens as a way to connect spiritually with their icons. Today, these drugs are being manufactured by dealers in laboratories all over the world for recreational use, and they are far more likely to bring harm to the user than other drugs because of their long-lasting trip.

What is Dextromethorpha?

Dextromethorpha, or DXM, is known in the medical field since it’s used in cough medicine to suppress the coughing reflex. The central nervous system is affected by DXM since it calms our coughing reflex, which means that it blocks receptors in the brain. This drug alone is taken in a pill form, and the composition of the drug varies based on the production. Dextromethorphan is a powerful hallucinogen that’s often abused since the user takes more pills each time to increase their high. This drug is tricky since users never experience the same high and as it varies by individual, it also varies by each use.

Since DXM is the active ingredient in cough medicines and other over-the-counter drugs, it’s easy to get, and it’s not exactly illegal to use. If you’ve noticed, when you buy cough syrup at the drugstore, they scan your ID to make sure you’re not one of the people buying it in excess. DXM offers the same euphoric effects that opiates do and are closely related, but not to the extent of heroin or morphine.

Do you know what’s in DXM?

Not always. Dextromethorphan is often found as a contaminant in the production of ecstasy. This drug, like many drugs produced in a lab and sold on the street, is one of the riskiest drugs to purchase since no one ever knows for sure how it’s made. There are traces of many other drugs that are cheaper to produce, but promote the same hallucinatory effects.

DXM’s Long-term Health Issues

Brain function and cognition are often impaired in the long run since hallucinations, and the perception of reality, is distorted over an extended period. People take this drug in public places and are not used to the illusions and effects that it can have, which is why so many deaths occur on DXM. There have been many accounts of this drug causing hallucinations of demonic figures and grotesque imagery that causes people to harm themselves, jump from tall buildings, and walk into traffic.

Physical changes with muscle coordination happen if the drug is abused and has time to disrupt the central nervous system. In long-term users of DXM, muscle spasms are frequent and are a telltale sign of widespread abuse. Things like increased heart rate and overworking the heart muscle can exacerbate any cardiovascular issues and hardening of the arteries. What happens to the body when we are using drugs like this is that we mimic a state of distress in the body, and it wreaks havoc on our system, not to mention the stripping of nerve endings.

Treatment for DXM Addiction

Medical detox is necessary for people that have abused DXM and have created a dependent relationship between the body and the drug. Our medical staff will supervise a safe and comfortable detox method for our patients. We move into therapy directly following this detox and begin with talk therapy in private and group settings, stimulating the mind with integrative treatments, nutritional education and physical activity that will strengthen and refresh the body.
